Election Day!

This is my first year ever teaching Election Day! I was so excited to teach my students what Election Day is all about. We started this lesson in social studies, where we talked about the process of voting. My students were SO excited to learn that we had a say about who our next president would be. They were also SO disappointed to learn that they were not old enough to vote (2028 is not toooooo far away)!

The next day, we read the story Duck for President and Grace for President. We talked about each story and retold each story. We then made our voter registration cards, as you cannot vote without it! I gave the students time to make an informed decision, and then they casted their vote! I made a ballot box, and they each received a sticker that read "I voted today!"

After they casted their votes, we pretended like it was a real election and had writing workshop while we waited for all the votes to be counted. During writing workshop, each student wrote about what they would do if they were President. Their responses were priceless. Recess for days!

During math, it was finally time to count the votes! We graphed each vote and drum roll please...

Grace is our new president! When I asked my students why they voted for Grace, their response was that "she is a real person and we should have a real person as our president and not a duck!"
Oh how I love these kindergarten minds!

May the best candidate win!
